Dr. Yongjun Zhu

Dr. Yongjun Zhu is an associate professor in the Department of Library and Information Science at Yonsei University, South Korea. He is the founding director of the DataLab and the Center for Science of Science at Yonsei University.

Before joining Yonsei University, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Library and Information Science and department chair in the Department of Data Science at Sungkyunkwan University. He also worked as a postdoctoral associate at the Department of Population Health Sciences, Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Information Science from the College of Computing and Informatics at Drexel University, where he was awarded the 2017 Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship.

He is passionate about advancing the science of science in South Korea through various initiatives, including:

  1. Introducing the country’s first graduate-level course on the science of science in 2022.
  2. Establishing the first university-based research center dedicated to the science of science in 2025.
  3. Launching fellowship programs and awards to support early-career researchers in the field in 2025.
  4. Publishing high-quality research articles and open datasets.
  5. Expanding initiatives to further foster research and collaboration in the field.
  6. Staying flexible and enthusiastic about bold ideas—especially those I’ll wish I had thought of first.
